I just spent hours on a town layout for my book. I'm a very visual person so I need to see how far someone needs to walk to get from the grocery store to the laundromat, or where they might catch a train. I followed some advice by borrowing another town's layout but then I didn't like it enough and tweaked it until it made sense to me. I think I've spent far too long on it but at least the setting for the first part of the book is truly set now.
This morning my husband asked me why I'm spending so much time on all these picky details now and I told him it's because I want it to be like a t.v. cooking show-- and right now, my soux chef is getting all my ingredients lined up, chopped up, measured and set out in pretty little bowls. My counters are all cleared and the oven is pre-heated. I want it so that November 1st rolls over and the camera rolls and I look like Martha just adding pinches of this and tablespoons of that and whipping them all nicely together, never having to hunt down an odd piece of equipment that my husband pushed to the back of the upper shelf while time is of the essence. Yes, I know, there's no pre-baked perfection already sitting in the oven, BUT, if I can get as much prep done ahead of time as I can-- well...I think that will make the upcoming weeks just that much easier, don't you?
Here's hoping :).
Okay. Time to feed some hungry babies and tidy up my house for tomorrow's playdate...annnnnnd, back to real life.
