I don't lightly join in boycotts, rallies, and protests. I think there are so many "causes" these days that voices (however well-intended) get lost in the shouting crowds. I am even more hesitant to join in Christian boycotts, rallies, and protests because many times- Christians put themselves in the place of God and dare to speak for God.
But in the month of December, I have added my name to those who will be closing wallets, checkbooks, and withholding plastic- in an effort to let major film studios know- as a Christian, the name of God is holy to me. I think God's take on this is clear. God's name is holy and not to be used lightly. I strive to teach my children the holiness of God's name. I make every effort not to misuse God's name. I find the misuse and vain use of God's name offensive, therefore, I will not view, nor will I support the film industry with my money if the films use God's name in vain.
This is a pointed effort to let the major film industries know that like profanity, using God's name in vain is offensive and should be added to the MPAA warnings. "G" rated movies should not contain misuses of God's name or have God's name used in vain.
Those involved in this movement are not deluded or otherwise misled. We know this may only be a drop in the bucket, an annoyance at best. But it's a start. Maybe this December of Christians taking a stand and saying, we value God's name over entertainment, rolls over into future Decembers and maybe in a few year's time- our numbers won't just be annoying, but painful enough that the major film studios will have to take notice.
I'm including the letter my friend Lisa Mikitarian wrote about this movement. I hope you'll not just considering supporting us in prayer, but that you'll support us by closing your wallets to movies this December, too.
Think it's too far? Too out-there? How many times do you hear people uttering the name of God in other religion's in vain? A deity's name is revered, it seems, in every faith but my own.
If you need an extra challenge, join me in turning off the television during December, too.
Greetings Friends,
With December so close, I thought we could make one final push for the December movie boycott. The plan is to stay away from all films, regardless of rating, made by studios who allow the Lord's names to be used in vain in their "G" rated movies.
There have been questions about the boycott like: Why have one? What good will it do?
Here is the most succinct answer I can give.
How many times have we heard if you don't like what's in a movie, don't watch it?
The best way to be heard is with your pocketbook. The problem is that not enough of us are doing this at the same time to make an impact. There's a reason the Constitution guarantees us the right to assemble. People in numbers have power. Additionally, December is one of the biggest grossing months of the year—more impact. That's the why.
What good will it do?
All the major studios (Walt Disney/Pixar, Fox Walden, Paramount, Columbia, Universal, Twentieth Century Fox) allow God slurs into their "G" rated movies. Not every film they make contains them, but there's no policy against them.
According to the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), "G" rated movies contain NOTHING in theme, LANGUAGE, nudity, sex, violence or other matters that in the view of the rating board would offend parents whose younger children view the motion picture.
Silence on our part means OMGs and variations thereof aren't offensive to us. Granted there are substantially bigger problems in movies (and society), but here we have the opportunity to make a statement about our faith, down at the lowest level with our children and grandchildren, where the rating definition is the most clear-cut. Definitions for "PG" and up become much more convoluted.
We can't boycott the MPAA, so we're going directly to the studios responsible for production. As of now, Christians become important to the studios when there's a particular movie they want to market to us. If enough people (not just parents and grandparents) stay away from ALL movies, regardless of rating, made by these picture studios, we will show up on their radar. We will be heard through our pocket books. We haven't been heard through the letters we've written.
That's the good it will do.
The message we'll give when they ask why?
Our Christian God is Holy. The third commandment states that we are not to use God's name in Vain. The most well-known prayer in our country begins: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. You, the movie studios, allow God's name to be used in vain, as curse words, as insults—and apparently that is your right, but don't tell us it's not offensive. Follow the definition of the MPAA and at least take them out of "G" rated movies.
If you could pass this on via Facebook, emails, blogs, forums etc. we might just make this happen yet.
In Christ's Name,
Lisa Mikitarian
